Signs to Look For That Indicate You’re Over-Watering Your Garden

Sometimes the simple task of watering your garden can turn into a classic case of too much of a good thing. Proper garden design takes into account the critical role water plays in the survival of plants. All gardeners learn early on to be aware of the dire consequences of insufficient water. This concern with avoiding under-watering and its consequences sometimes results in a temptation to be over-attentive and water too much.

Over-watered plants are basically suffocated: excess moisture in the soil prevents the absorption of vital oxygen. Unfortunately, the early visible cues of over-watering are often very similar to the symptoms of under-watering. Over-watering can result from simply applying too much water too often, or it can be a consequence of faulty garden design that provides inadequate drainage and results in excess water retention in the soil.

Over-watering requires immediate corrective action to avoid plant death. Here are a few of the visual signs of over-watering:

Yellowed lower leaves on the plant.
A wilted or sagging appearance.
Stunted root growth and/or rotting roots.
Failure to thrive in the growing cycle.
New leaves turn brown quickly.
Algae growing in the soil causing a green appearance.

Delightful Succulent and Sedum Assortments to Boost Garden Style

In every garden there are certain plants that tend to draw all of the attention. In some areas of the garden, it could be the bright, vibrant plants. In others, it’s the plants that have a unique, intricate look. Many of these arrangements are often succulent and sedum arrangements. Winter Care Tips for Your Outdoor Plants

When the holiday season passes, get ready for the true New England winter weather to set in. While we take the steps to keep our homes well-maintained and warm this season, make sure to protect your outdoor plants as well. Last week, we shared with you how to care for your houseplants during winter, but how do you plan to care for your outdoor favorites as well? Fortunately, the process is simple. Just follow these easy winter care tips to keep your plants blooming and brilliant for next spring!

For shrubs or small trees that are newly planted, create a cocoon of course burlap to cover the plant from top to bottom.
If you’re worried about a heavy snow or ice pulling the plant over, add a few tall tomato stakes to help support the plant before wrapping it in burlap.
For most perennials, simply protecting the crown of the plant is sufficient. Using a glass dome accessory called a cloche can be especially helpful for this.

Then, just in time for spring, uncover your plants and ease them out into the fresh, warm air! You’ll be surprised at how impressive the blooms will be and how Old Man Winter couldn’t touch them. For more winter garden inspiration, visit Marvin Gardens on Facebook!
